Finding Her Voice and Independence – Autism Spectrum Stories

Kicking Off Autism Awareness Month: Autism Spectrum Stories

This Autism Awareness Month, we are honored to share the story of Nere and her daughter Camila, a story of resilience, hope, and the transformative power of support.

In this heartfelt video, Nere speaks candidly about her journey with Camila, who was diagnosed with autism and other medical conditions at the age of three. Like many parents, Nere’s most significant concern has always been her daughter’s future.

“What will become of my child when I’m gone?” It’s a question that weighs heavily on parents of children with autism. However, Nere has found reassurance through our SPARTA Autism program. She now sees a brighter, more independent future for Camila.

A Journey of Challenges and Breakthroughs

When Camila was first diagnosed, she faced significant challenges with communication. She primarily spoke through echolalia — often repeating words or phrases she heard without understanding their meaning. Simple expressions like “Mom, I love you or “I have a tummy ache remained out of reach. For Nere, the inability to understand her daughter’s needs was heartbreaking.

Their journey to find support began in the Dominican Republic, where resources were limited. After coming to New York and without family nearby, Nere relies on her daughter’s providers and the SPARTA Autism team to build the support network they desperately need.

Finding Hope with SPARTA

After a neuropsychological evaluation recommended ABA therapy, Camila started her treatment. During this time, a program director visited their home and saw the incredible potential within Camila. Recognizing the family’s need for more comprehensive support, the director made a call that changed their lives: “You have to come to help this family.” For Nere, it was a moment of feeling truly seen and supported.

At SPARTA, we focus on more than just clinical progress; we emphasize social interaction, family involvement, and everyday life skills. Camila receives one-on-one support, participates in recreational activities, and follows a personalized morning and afterschool routine guided by her dedicated providers. Parent training also became a cornerstone of her progress, empowering Nere to become an active partner in her daughter’s growth.

From Milestones to Miracles

The results have been nothing short of remarkable. Nere had written five-year goals for Camila, but in just six months, those goals were accomplished.

  • Camila, once unable to chew solid foods, can now enjoy a sandwich.
  • She learned to dress herself and pour her own water.
  • Most importantly, she can recognize her thirst and express her needs.

Her communication has blossomed. From repeating phrases without understanding, Camila now uses words with intent, even joyfully exclaiming, “Oh my God! in moments of excitement. Additionally, her focus has improved to the point where she no longer needs medication for attention deficit and hyperactivity.

A Mother’s Gratitude

Nere shares her heartfelt appreciation with our supporters:

“Bathing, dressing, reading, preparing something to eat — these are things we all do every day, and it is easy for us to take for granted. Many children with severe autism cannot do these things without the necessary help and support. SPARTA helps change the quality of these children’s lives for the better.
